Nissan released the BNR34 (R34) GT-R in January 1999. Its most instantly recognizable feature was in the interior, where a new 5.8-inch display on the dashboard that allowed the monitoring of all system components, replaced the old analog gauges of previous models. Data such as lap times, engine output and turbo pressure could be logged and downloaded later. This of course endeared the car even more to the young, technophile demographic that made up a significant portion of GT-R buyers.
The R34 also enhanced safety with the inclusion of a standard passenger-side airbag and optional rear side airbags. The interior console was brushed in aluminum and the interior was very quiet for a hardcore sports car. The car was some 74mm shorter than the R33 that preceded it, and the gearbox was a new 6-speed unit from transmission specialist Getrag, replacing the old 5-speed one.
This model still continued the utilizing the services of the reliable RB26DETT engine, albeit with significant revisions such as new camshafts, a new stainless steel exhaust system and new ceramic turbochargers that featured variable boost timing, reduced spool time and overall quieter operation. Nissan still insisted that the power output was 280hp, whereas the real figure was something closer to 320hp.
