Peugoet 308 GTi – France’s new hot hatch
In terms of performance hatches Peugoet have had some promising moments, the old school 205 GTi was epic and when the 206 was owning the WRC things were looking good. But in the last ten years Peugoet has failed to produce a hot hatch that really got the juices flowing. The good news is that the French carmaker hasn’t given up and the GTI badge isn’t dead for Peugeot after all. To prove it Peugoet has just launched a new 308 GTi sport hatchback model for the European market.
Available exclusively as a 5-door model (at least for now), the new 308 GTi gets the same 1.6-liter THP engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger found in the Mini Cooper S and Peugeot’s own RCZ sports coupe.
It produces an output of 200-horsepower and maximum torque of 275 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels only through a six-speed manual gearbox.
Peugeot says that the 308 GTi does the zero to 100km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds, while it completes the 1,000m sprint in 27.8 seconds and returns impressive fuel consumption of 6.9 lt/100km combined.
The car’s chassis has also been adapted to handle the extra power over the stock model, it now features a new suspension and steering wheel system setup, a 10mm lower ride height and 340 mm diameter brake discs at the front and 290 mm at the rear. The 308 GTi rides on 18-inch alloy wheels cloaked in 225/40 R18 sport tyres.
Styling upgrades are subtle and include a shiny black carbon-style insert under the front bumper, roof spoiler, a rear diffuser finished in Perla Nera black, GTI badges and twin chrome exhaust outlets.
Special cabin appointments include sports seats, aluminum foot rest and gear knob, flat-bottom leather sport steering wheel, and piano black trim.
In Europe the 308 GTi will be launched next month, no word yet if it will make it to NZ.
