On October 17, the Grand Final of the 2009 NOS Energy NZ Drift Series in association with NAC Insurance went down at South Auckland's Pukekohe Park Raceway.
Heading into the event, 22 points separated the pointy end of the field, with Dargaville's Gaz Whiter heading the pack from Mad Mike Whiddett. However, after winning the first two rounds, a fourth place finish for Gaz at round three allowed Mad Mike - who just so happened to win round three - to close in on Gaz's lead. And to put that 22 points into perspective, all Mike needed to do in order to leapfrog Gaz was finish one spot ahead of him, and out-qualify him by three spots.
The first of those two tasks was done easily for Mike, qualifying the Red Bull Mazda RX-8 in first position. Meanwhile, Gaz wasn't finding the same success on the track, qualifying down in seventh.
Predictably, both championship contenders snuck through their Best 16 round. However, neither win came easy, with Gaz coming close to a re-run, and Mad Mike having to repeat his Best 16 battle to decipher a winner.
Mike's next round came a little easier, however, up against Dave Steedman. Unfortunately for Gaz, he met ex-champion and teammate, Fanga Dan Woolhouse in the Best 8. Always a tough competitor, Fanga laid down a tough battle. Fanga advanced, Gaz didn't. Meanwhile, Mike had taken care of Dave, earning him a minimum of one spot higher finish, and in doing so earned himself the championship title.
Trivial to how the rest of the day panned out for Mike, he fought on to secure second place behind Fanga Dan for the round win. Battling it out for the final podium spot were Carl Ruiterman and Jason Sellers. Unfortunately for Jason, a mid-battle issue forced him to retire his car to fourth, allowing 2007 and 2008 NZ Drift Series champion, Carl Ruiterman, to grab the final podium spot. It was also a nice way to secure third in the championship for Carl, too.
We'll have a full run-down of the event in issue #157 of NZ Performance Car magazine, on sale November 23.
